Overview

Since its establishment in 1953, the Department of Emergency Medicine has been an integral part of Drum Tower Hospital and continues to provide high-quality emergency and critical care medical care to the patients lived in Nanjing City area or other cities around Nanjing. The Emergency Department consists of the Emergency Internal Medicine Division and Surgery Division, which provide emergency and critical care to patients in acute distress. It focuses on the rapid identification of life-threatening conditions (Triage), the performance of stabilizing procedures, and additional assessment to find a more definite diagnosis. In addition, special clinical and examination rooms (clinical joint room) including Internal Medicine, Surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, gynecology, consultation, and facilities are also available to offer emergency care to patients with related problems. For rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment, the department itself has its own examination laboratories, x-ray, and CT scanner. On average, it offers emergency care to some 600-800 patients daily or 210,000 patients annually. There are 18 beds in the observation room which provided medical observation for 3000 patients annually. There are 42 beds in the common ward provided emergency medical care for 1300 patients and 10 beds in the EICU for 400 critically ill patients annually.


Conditions Treated

1. Cardiopulmonary brain resuscitation

2. Multiple emergency green channels were established including stroke, acute coronary syndrome, acute poisoning, trauma, acute left heart failure and acute respiratory failure, etc.

3. Emergency joint clinic unit: it is not only conducive to the rapid implementation of the green channels, but also conducive to the joint diagnosis and treatment of the internal, external, gynecology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology and other specialist department.

4. Standardized diagnosis and treatment system for acute poisoning.

5. Minimally invasive intracranial hematoma removal technique.

6. Minimally invasive hemodynamic monitoring technique.

7. Continuous blood purification technology.

 

Leadership

Now there are over 171 staffs including 35 emergency clinicians in the Emergency Center. 13 clinicians hold the title of an advanced technical post. There are also over 100 nurses in this department including 1 senior nurse.

 

Research & Achievement

The Department of Emergency Medicine has undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects at the national, provincial, municipal and hospital levels, including 2 projects funded by the national natural science foundation. It has completed the project “standardization of integrated research and application of diagnosis and treatment techniques for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases  “that joint bid by the national tenth five-year plan and Jiangsu province. It also participated in the national ministry of health emergency application technical specification project to establish the fast track standard for emergency treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It is mainly responsible for the "11th five-year" science and technology support plan of Jiangsu provincial health department and the Jiangsu rural appropriate technology demonstration study which is called the “standardized treatment technology promotion of emergency poisoning". It has launched more than 10 new technologies and published more than 160 papers in Chinese and English journals.

 

Education & Training

Our department also provides emergency medical training or educational programs for medicine residents and medical students. Different training programs are available not only to hospital staff, but also to outside-hospital staff, not only for medical practices, but also for other medically related disciplines.
